Yeah, I remember reading once that Marilyn Monroe had been one of the first women to wear a two-piece bikini. Maybe before that women did use them, but not in public, at the pool or at the beach.
I've got Bolles paintings of girls in two-piece suits long before the 40s and I'll post some examples on my Bolles flickr page. You both are right about this being scandalous, Spicy Stories was shut down for a time and one of its editors was thrown in jail. No wonder Bolles never signed a single cover to this magazine.
You know, nowadays that ad would be seen as the norm but back then I bet it was scandalous, funny how times have changed...
ReplyDeleteI don't know, I hear things were pretty wild at the time... That it was later, during the forties and fifties, that people got all uptight.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why histories of style usually say that the bikini was invented during World War II? Whatever you call it, it's got va-voom.

ReplyDeleteThrown in jail? I take back what I said about people only getting uptight later...
